Hippocrates: On the Sacred Disease, Hippocratic Oath

January 17 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Hippocrates is a semimythical figure who is regarded as the Father of Medicine.  He may have been a real person, a leader within a movement within Greek medicine. However, the actual authorship of any of the “Hippocratic writings” is unknown. These writings are interesting and valuable because they provide detailed descriptions of patients’ symptoms and signs of illness (e.g., the oldest surviving description of what we now call migraine headache).

What sets the Hippocratics apart is their insistence on seeking natural (as opposed to supernatural) explanations for disease. This attitude was expressed most clearly in On th Sacred Disease.  The Hippocratics also took a professional oath that has been adapted to become the oath that modern physicians still swear today.
