Harper Lee: To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman
Nelle Harper Lee (whose pen name was Harper Lee) won the Pulitzer Prize in 1962 for her novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The novel was the basis for the movie of the same name. The movie was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning three: Best Actor (Gregory Peck), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Art Direction. The novel is semiautobiographical. The main characters are based on her family and her childhood friend Truman Capote, whom she helped with the research for his book In Cold Blood. Lee was the model for a character in Capote’s first novel (Other Voices, Other Rooms). Lee was an intensely private person. She granted few interviews and made few public appearances after the publication of Mockingbird.
To Kill a Mockingbird was semiautobiographical. Like the narrator Scout, Lee was the tomboyish daughter of a prominent lawyer in a small town in Alabama. Like Lee’s father, Scout’s father had defended black men who were accused in a murder case. The case in To Kill a Mockingbird may also have been based partly on the Scottsboro Boys rape case from 1931.
The novel Go Set a Watchman deals with the same characters but is set 20 years later. There is some evidence that it was an earlier draft of To Kill a Mockingbird, and that at some point, Lee decided to tell the story from a child’s perspective, rather than that of a young adult. Thus, one story is told by a little girl who worships her father, while the other is told from the perspective of a young adult who realizes that her father is human.
