James Baldwin: Go Tell It on the Mountain

Go Tell It on the Mountain (published 1953) is a semiautobiographical novel by James Baldwin. The novel is set in Harlem, a neighborhood in New York City that was home to the “New Negro” movement and the Harlem Renaissance: a flowering of Black culture involving music, poetry, novels, theater, and the visual arts. Go Tell It on the Mountain deals frankly with the tumultuous family life of a teenage boy whose stepfather is a preacher. The novel deals with the profound effects (positive and negative) that the church was having on the Black community. The title refers to an African-American spiritual that became a popular Christmas carol
James Baldwin became a prominent voice in the Civil Rights Movement. His debate with William F. Buckley is particularly interesting: James Baldwin vs William F Buckley: A legendary debate from 1965
