The Chimes, Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens wrote several “Christmas books”:

• A Christmas Carol (1843)
• The Chimes (1844)
• The Cricket on the Hearth (1845)
• The Battle of Life (1846)
• The Haunted Man and the Ghost’s Bargain (1848)

The Chimes deals with a “ticket porter” (a man licensed to carry goods for hire) named Trotty.  On New Year’s Eve, Trotty is filled with gloom at newspaper reports of crime and immorality among the working class. He concludes that the poor must be incorrigibly bad by nature. Yet through some supernatural experiences, he regains his faith in humanity’s ability to improve.
